Maybe the ads in the sidebars gave it away ;-) I honestly thought about keeping politics separate from the main topic of this vlog which is, ultimately, elite youth hockey and the '92 birth year. Today, though, as we wind down to our final post which will probably be this weekend or next, I made a financial contribution to a political campaign.- my first ever. Believe it or not, it wasn't because of the color of the candidate's skin or the gender of the candidate. It was because of the message of hope. Some may call my rationale naive, but our nation needs the kind of inspiration that propelled us to greatness during the industrial revolution, the kind of unwavering hope that freed us to become a global leader in finance and technology, and the kind of compassion that ended the crippling institution of slavery and the genocide of a nation in Europe. If you "got it" when "Red" described the hOpe of a free man at the end of the Shawshank Redemption ("Get busy livin', or get busy dying"), or the kind of hOpe that impelled the men of the 54th Mass Regiment to lead the charge on Fort Wagner as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw stared into the exact future moment which we now occupy, then you "get" why I am posting the following video on a hockey vlog. May we allow God to truly bless America. Hockey is fun, but it is also life in microcosm. The hOpe that inspires players to find their limits and achieve greatness is the very same hOpe that inspires nations to achieve their potential. The "O" in "hOpe" is "Obama" From Shawshank, "I hOpe I can make it accross the border. I hOpe to see my friend and shake his hand. I hOpe the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hOpe." </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Ice,Hockey,A,Train,Arapahoe,Bantam,AAA,Thunderbirds,Pee,Wee,AA,CCYHL,Youth,Hockey,Compuware,Hockey</itunes:keywords><description>It might have escaped some of this vlog's readers that I support Barack Obama for president. While two outstanding players have recently chosen the Major Junior route in Brandon Archibald and Austin Watson, many other top players can expect the phones to start ringing Monday as the NCAA coaches are officially allowed to begin making one phone call per month to players who have just completed their sophomore year. I doubt it was coincidental that the rule, changed last April, set the date prior to the National Camps allowing schools to get at least an introduction in before they see the players in Rochester and the week after most have finished their final exams. If you'd like an easy way to see what's allowed when, here's a handy-dandy NCAA Recruiting Chart. NCAA Recruiting Rules (as of 04/26/07): 13.1.3.1.4 Exception — Men’s Ice Hockey In men’s ice hockey, an institution is permitted to make one telephone call per month to a prospective student-athlete [or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s)] on or after June 15 at the conclusion of the prospective student-athlete’s sophomore year in high school through July 31 after the prospective student-athlete’s junior year in high school. An institution is permitted to make one telephone call per week to a prospective student-athlete [or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s)] beginning August 1 prior to the prospective student-athlete’s senior year in high school. BTW: did anyone notice that 7 of this year's top 10 NHL prospects as ranked by ISS are from the OHL? One NCAA'er, one Russian, and one WHL'er. That's 8/10 from the Major Junior ranks. Not too shabby. </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Ice,Hockey,A,Train,Arapahoe,Bantam,AAA,Thunderbirds,Pee,Wee,AA,CCYHL,Youth,Hockey,Compuware,Hockey</itunes:keywords><description>Well, the last big event on the horizon for this vlog is the Select 16 Player Development Camp in Rochester beginning next Saturday, 06/21. Compuware's Alex Aleardi attended the Kitchener Ranger's camp recently while his former team mate, Austin Levi and Belle Tire's DJ Hastings took part the in the Plymouth Whalers camp last weekend. Some OHL teams send strength and conditioning plans to their recruits via mail while others like Kitchener and Plymouth bring the players in for orientation, physical testing, and some skating. The Whalers tested the boys at bench pressing, situps, long jumps, and high jumps among other things. They were weighed and measured, introduced to the Plymouth Community, and learned about the school system and billeting programs. Some veteran players like RJ Mahalak, Christian Steingraber, and the Tyler Browns showed up to pace the rookies. 92's at the Whalers camp were goaltenders Karsten Pankhurst and Scott Wedgewood, defensemen Daniel Bernardi (Whitby), Kevin Gravel (Marquette), Austin Levi (Compuware), and Colin McDonald (London), and fowards DJ Hastings (Belle Tire), Ben Holtom (Barrie), Brendan McLeskey (Motor City Chiefs), Sean Myers (Chatham-Kent) and 2008 first-rounder, Tyler Seguin (Toronto Young Nationals). It was surreal seeing my kid wearing an OHL jersey for the first time, and it was fun seeing all the Whalers fans who turned out to watch the scrimmages. The summer of camps continues for many players. Drafted or not, some USHL teams are inviting '92 players to their camps. NAHL teams are continuing to hold tryouts, and the USA Hockey National Select 16 Player Development Camp is only one month away now. We're looking forward to seeing our buds from the Rocky Mountain District again.
