Now that it’s been released on one of those “hood DVDs,” Game’s “Change of Heart” appearance is getting hyped as a scandalous rumor that nobody could ever verify until now.. but the truth is Game never denied he was on that show, he’s been open (in a defensive sort of way) about that for years. He spoke to me abou it a couple of years ago, when I profiled him for Mean Magazine. I spent that whole day with him and he made a very good impression, better than he does with his drama-ridden public persona.. I found him a good-hearted, gracious and sincere young dude, but kinda immature/insecure and prone to losing his composure and acting out when he feels his manhood is put in question. Which is what happened when I asked the “Change of Heart” question, his whole demeanor changed and he retreated into all this thuggish rah rah.. got awkward for a minute, you can probably tell on the tape that I was eager to calm him back down, on some “Ha ha ha this conversation is so funny and lighthea...

A couple of years ago I contributed to a book named Bling Bling: Hip-Hop’s Crown Jewels, an overview of hip-hop’s relationship with diamonds and jewelry. With my contributions I tried to provide some dissenting views on the bling phenomenon, by interviewing artists from what’s become known as hip-hop’s “golden age” or “conscious era” when gold chains were pushed out of style by beads and medallions. This is one of the convos I had back then, with the great Prince Paul.

Internet Beef Rap

Okay here’s the story: every Friday some friends of mine kill time at work by having a little e-mail rap battle.. they each type up a verse, then get someone to judge all the raps and pick the hottest, err, keystyle. Last week I agreed to be a guest judge, and sifted through all the CCs to pick out what I thought was a clear winner.. my two friends also made the same pick, and we reported the unanimous decision. But one of the other contestants, who had offered his rap in the form of a Powerpoint presentation, was salty about seeing all that effort go to waste, I guess.. so he took a shot at the judges, writing back “If you can’t write a good rhyme, don’t judge them!” Needless to say, I could not let this chance to do something totally silly challenge go unmet. So here’s the verse I threw together for him. -Jay Smooth http://www.hiphopmusic.com
