Performances on June 3rd and 10th, 2006. As we become increasingly aware of the global water crisis we are forced to consider our personal relationship to water. Using their bodies, the participating artists address issues such as contamination, shortages, filtration, hygiene, and ritual. Performances will take place simultaneously on two separate evenings at Exit Art. Although each artist addresses the specific topic in his/her own unique performance, the pieces function collectively as one theatrical presentation. Love/War/Sex: The Rude Mechanical Orchestra

December 1st, 2007: at the opening of Exit Art's newest program, Love/War/Sex, The Rude Mechanical Orchestra, New York City's radical marching band, performs. Love/War/Sex considers memory, history, ornaments, weapons and personal stories. This exhibition connects longing with violence and love with war, imagining the business of war in all its sexual manifestations. As a cultural space, we want to respond to current global conflicts by presenting this exhibition Love/War/Sex, a comment on our culture’s fascination with, and addiction to, war.

Love/War/Sex considers the conflation of those basic human instincts—a toxic combination manifested in images and stories coming out of Iraq. The works relate disparate issues such as weapon infatuation, war nostalgia, and the sexualization of violence to form an overall image of war as a perversely necessary part of our culture.

The exhibition incorporates video, sculpture, wallpaper, and a selection of weapons and military vehicles – the very tools that perpetuate societal shifts and make war possible —on loan from the Military Museum of Southern New England. The walls of the gallery will be papered with personal stories, imagining war conjured from texts.

The Rude Mechanical Orchestra is a New York City-based radical marching band. We exist in order to serve the efforts of progressive and radical groups and causes. We have and will continue to play for events that support feminism and women's rights, the queer community, labor, the environment, social and economic justice, peace and community self-determination. We pledge to fight racism, sexism, homophobia, war and violence in all its forms. Through our music, we strive to bring joy and inspiration to these communities and to bring new people into radical causes. Internally, we work towards being a safe, welcoming place for all genders and gender identities, ages, races, backgrounds, sexual orientations, disabilities and musical skill levels. Through our musical selections, we pay tribute to the world's cultures and the revolutionary role music has played throughout history.

Brainwave:Common Senses

BRAINWAVE: Common Senses responds to current advancements in neurological research by visualizing and investigating the brain’s capacity for sense perception, memory, emotion and logic. The artists in this exhibition redefine this research in a different way, abandoning literal representations of the brain and categorical analysis in favor of works that take, as starting points, elements from neuroscience and flipping these ideas on their heads. These works create an alternate discourse between art and science, encouraging the viewer to consider the brain not only as the center of human activity but as a site for interpretation. This exhibition presents the brain as a site for scientific and philosophical debates, for examining our relationship to the world – and for questioning our common sense.

Exit Art is pleased to announce the opening of E.P.A. (Environmental Performance Actions), the first project of S.E.A, a large-scale program dealing with current environmental concerns and the way artists respond to them. E.P.A is a group exhibition surveying recent performance work from around the world that addresses current environmental crises. The exhibition will consist of videos, photographs, texts, related ephemera and a film program documenting recent performances. For this opening project we have invited curator, Amy Lipton, and founder/co-curator Patricia Watts of ecoartspace, a leading international environmental arts organization, to collaborate with Exit Art on the organization and presentation of this material. E.P.A. will include performance documentation from more than 30 international artists. These works, created in the public sphere, draw attention to and engage the public in a dialogue about issues such as climate change, watersheds, urbanization and, ultimately, human survival. E.P.A. will set the precedence for future exhibitions of S.E.A. dealing with environmental issues including The End of Oil, about the global oil crisis and alternative energy, and Consume, about food production, agricultural and sustainable living practices. An exhibition of historical social-environmental art works is also planned to place this work in context.

S.E.A. Presents "HumanNature": a Discussion on Climate Change

An excerpt from a panel discussion with artist Eve Mosher, climate change scientist David Van Luven, and eco-art curator Patricia Watts. The Discussion centers on the implications of climate change on New York City’s landscape and community – and exploring how art can connect human beings with the awareness of larger environmental issues. Eve Mosher’s "High Water Line" traces 10-feet above sea level to mark the potential danger of increased flooding brought on by stronger and more frequent storms as a result of climate change. High Water Line, which took place in 2007 on the New York waterfront, gives an immediate visual and local understanding of the impact of climate change. "High Water Line" is a part of E.P.A. E.P.A. Charles Juhasz-Alvarado: A Conversation about Art, the Island and the U.S.

An excerpt from a discussion with artist Charles Juhasz-Alvarado and Deborah Cullen, Director of Curatorial Programs at El Museo del Barrio, New York. The talk will cover themes and political implications in Juhasz-Alvarado's work and will investigate his process. In this Excerpt, Juhasz-Alvorado explores an incident leading to the creation of one of his pieces and the nature of Puerto Rico. Charles Juhasz-Alvarado: Complicated Stories will present the artist’s past and present bodies of works as an ongoing dialogue on social consciousness and cultural identity. Charles Juhasz-Alvarado’s elaborate site-specific installations engage the viewer through narrative, performance, audio, and sculpture to introduce a fantasy world that serves as an acute and humorous allegory of today’s multicultural society and the artist’s own background. In this age, where many artists outsource their work or divide the labor of creating their work among several people, Charles Juhasz-Alvarado has mastered the literal crafting involved in constructing his visions. He works hands-on, asserting his complete control over all aspects of his imagination. The artist himself is not only seen in the concept, but manifests himself in the shaping of steel, in the shaving of wood, so that when the viewer enters the installation, the works involve the viewer in one coherent thought. Juhasz-Alvarado was chosen to be Puerto Rico’s representative at the Bienal de Saõ Paulo, Brazil (2002). He has also exhibited in: Octava Bienal de La Habana, Havana, Cuba (2003); II Biennale of Contemporary Art, Prague, Czech Republic (2005), Zverev Center for Contemporary Art in Moscow, Russia (2006), and most recently at the Singapore Biennale (2006). His most recent solo exhibition was at desM Galeria Petrus, Santurce, Puerto Rico (2005). This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in New York. Exit Art and Trickster Theater's "Somehow" is "a precious lie that evolves to light in the darkness of us." Five actors explore Exit Art's "Brainwave: Common Senses" through monologues that span various issues inspired by the show. Memory, anxiety, literature, education, knowledge and mental disability all come into play through the original work. All material was written by the performers and prepared in collaboration with Papo Colo, founder and cultural producer of Exit Art. Performances took place April 16th and 17th, 2008. Summer Mixtape vol. 1: the Get Smart edition

Long after the cassette tape has become an obsolete relic of a clumsier analog era, the essence of the mixtape lives on through CDs and MP3 playlists. "Summer Mixtape Volume 1: the Get Smart edition" pays tribute to this vital form of popular expression with a group exhibition that compiles some of the hottest work from the New York area that the curators have seen all year. The curators looked back through previous calls for submissions, canvassed other curators and artists for recommendations, visited dozens of artists’ studios, and saw hundreds of shows to wind up with the 27 artists that make up Summer Mixtape Volume 1. The works in the exhibition cover a vast array of themes and mediums, mirroring the diverse mix of sights, sounds and cultures on the streets of New York. The show also features a jukebox programmed specifically for the exhibition that includes mixtapes and cover art produced by the artists and some special guests. Audio mixes are still made for long road trips, disc jockey sets, as mood-setters for parties, as surrogate love letters, and as outlets to hear the latest hip-hop hitting the streets. Yet despite its cultural ubiquity, the mixtape remains a durable emblem of the counter culture. Drawing on these influences, Summer Mixtape Volume 1 materializes the mixtape’s spirit of appropriation, customization, unabashed nostalgia and relaxed fun.
