Grooverider Released From Dubai Prison

Oh lookie! Seems like global drum 'n bass superstar, Grooverider, has been released from prison in Dubai after serving 10 months of his 4-year sentence.

If you don't remember, the UK dj and producer was arrested in November of 2007 for having 2.16 grams of weed in his pocket and porn. He said he had forgotten about the weed being in his pocket until they caught him; no comment on the porn.

Division Kent - Superstitious + Remixes

Sometimes we get good stuff and so-so stuff, but this act is definitely one to keep an eye on. Division Kent are a duo out of Zurich, Switzerland that are shaking things up with their electronic-rock ensemble. The track we're posting, "Superstitious", just blew me away. It's a collaboration between the band and group Risqué & Crackdown who "never met in person, it's all based on a virtual friendship...".

Their upcoming new album Gravity, out in 2009, culls from a broad range of sounds. You can get an idea of what I'm saying if you listen to their myspace.

As a bonus, we have two fantastic and totally different remixes from that upcoming disc. Fans should know The Phantom's Revenge who brings a filter-house/disco bass-pumping touch to the track "Offshore". In contrast, the Shook remix of "L'Heure Bleue" is an 80's synthpop anthem. Turn your iPhone into a "Lemur pad"

Ok, so not really a fully-customizable Lemur pad, but at least a touch-screen MIDI controller on the cheap.

Silicon Studios has several iPhone apps that let you take control of your music via the phone's touch-interface. The greatest thing about it? It's wireless! Using a free native-OSX app communicating with your phone on the same wireless network, you can control any MIDI-supported audio application. Think of the possibilities with Ableton or VJ software.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that Evil Nine had a new release coming out called They Live!, and the single is officially out with even more remixes than originally thought from Breakbot and Rogerseventytwo.

I'm definitely feeling Rogerseventytwo's mix, has a big room feel to it. If you want a more laidback take, which is a departure from the original, check out Breakbot's mix. We've come to the last set in our BEMF Live series; I know you've all been waiting for this one. It's a pretty big thing when you can cross over from a genre to another, but it's a whole other thing to be successful in both and have consistent gigs. AJ, aka , Treasure Fingers, aka one part of the internationally-known American drum 'n bass group Evol Intent, has done just that.

With Cross the Dancefloor, Treasure Fingers has affirmed his place among the top of the crop of new up and coming producers in the genre. Including being on A-Trak + Nick Catchdub's Fools Gold, he's got a pretty good startup in the electro scene.

Second to last set in the BEMF Live series!

We wrote about Todosantos about a year back when we saw their first live show at Monkeytown in Brooklyn. Needless to say, we were blown away by the sheer audiovisual impact and the fact that they had all the pieces of the music puzzle together.

If you didn't read the article, Todosantos are an energetic 4-person group hailing from Venezuela now living in New York. Their performance is a mix of live VJing and graphic manipulation with their own original tracks that mash up house, electro, latin music, breaks, ghettotech, and more to form a sound they like to call "tukky bass".

Mix all that together on a hot summer night on a canal with a huge crowd and you've got Todosantos' explosive BEMF-closing set! The live set is just part of the puzzle; you need to SEE them to appreciate the performance so check out their myspace for upcoming shows.

New iPhone + mobile versions of Subdrive!

I've been holding out for a while to do a "iPhone" version of Subdrive because I think it's a bit backwards to design a different site for every new device or resolution that comes out. Plus, you know, the iPhone is supposed to be the "real internet". However, I realized that browsing the site on EDGE or even 3G iPhones, or worse, if you're on a slow Opera Mobile phone, can be a horrible, sad, slow experience.

Hence why, as of today, if you point your mobile browser to m.subdrivemedia.com, you'll be able to read, download, and use the entire site in a friendly, mobile format. The iPhone version is quite slick, so if you have one, check it out.

Oh and the site will not automatically redirect to the mobile version. You have the option to use the mobile site or not. But hey, if you want auto-redirect or have some comments on this new stuff, please let us know in the comments box!

Subscribing to the podcast however is still a desktop-only deal as podcasts are not part of the iPhone/iPod Touch iTunes store.

Isla from Crush got everyone pumped throughout the day as the official MC of the festival; you may have heard her hyping the crowd on some of the live BEMF sets. We got this in the mail from UK production team OldSchoolReunion. It's a fantastic gritty remix of Japanese electro band Chic and the Tramp's DeLorean. The original is great, but the oldschoolreunion version definitely adds a big nightclub edge to it. Throw a hook on it and you've got an even bigger banger.

Bye-Bye Muxtape - RIAA Confirms It's the reason Muxtape shut down

You may remember we posted about the digital mixtape website, Muxtape, a few months ago here on the site. Even then Muxtape had become an internet hit and until recently was extremely popular. I say recently because Muxtape is gone, beaten down dead by the behemoth that is the RIAA. Like OiNK last year, the use of Muxtape was in a legal gray area. Muxtape users could upload songs to the Muxtape server and then build a twelve song playlist to share with friends. Obviously, the songs were only available for streaming, but Muxtape was allegedly not paying licensing fees to the appropriate parties and thus with legal rights, the RIAA went ahead and attempted to have them comply by paying the fees. After several months of not removing the alleged illegal materials, Muxtape has been shut down.

Muxtape's situation isn't unique or remotely new. It's just a part of a string of sites being shut down or threatened by licensing fees which are supposed to help the industry pay its artists in the digital age, not hurt them. Artists want to be paid, but many don't want to join the larger labels who have and continue to alienate customers by extinguishing access to new avenues of accessing music that does not include payola tracks or music people don't want to hear.

In that sense, there's some fear online that Pandora may be the next to go down. Not because it's doing anything illegal, but because Pandora simply can't afford to pay copyright-holders royalties. It's estimated that 70% of their $25 million revenue is going straight towards paying licensing fees. And as the site gets more popular, especially as what has been seen with the new iPhone app, there will be more licenses to pay.

It really is a rough path right now with the future of innovative online radio and music in danger. In 2002, royalty charges were threatening companies like Live365; this is the second-wave and something has to be done before the big 5 ~~come after the blogs~~ they already have. Kidz By Collete has apparently been shut down due to copyright infringement.

All in all, this is the reality: music is not a hobby. People that make music professionally should be paid for their art; the labels need to work together with the media to find a balance so new blood can come in and help the industry without being charged/sued to hell. Otherwise, we will be left with an even more stagnant, corrupt, and uncreative shell of something formerly known as the music industry.

I was talking to Curt of Flosstradamus a few months ago when they were last in town about what they were working on. Talk of the album came up including touring, but one thing they said though was that they wanted to start working on a podcast and get out more mixes. Well, today they've released their debut on the Mad Decent Dancemania podcast!

It's a great mixup of early Chicago house tracks and ghetto-tech that'll get your booty shakin'. Check out on the site or subscribe to the podcast and you'll get updates regularly, just like on Subdrive!

Curt from Flosstradamus here. Just giving you the low down on this podcast. The boy Diplo asked us to do a Dancemania pod cast. If you don’t know about it Dancemania is a label out of Chicago that started in the mid 80’s with some pretty known anthems and artists. It wasn’t till the early 90’s when the more known names such as: DJ Funk, Paul Johnson, Dj Deeon, etc. were putting out heaters on DM, with ghetto and disco sounds. Within a few years the label put out more songs than you could download in one day off of hype machine. By 2001 they put out the DM 300 12″!! Over 300 songs on a single independent label out of Chicago! Pretty cool if ya ask me?

I finally listened to this from beginning to end and I have to say New York's Rekles, aka Daniel Casanova, did a fantastic job bringing the energy up, but at the same time playing tracks that just meshed with the outdoor vibe perfectly. You'll get what I mean when you hear this fantastic set. Pump it out at your next party while the heat is still around!

Yeah, I'm a genius for not posting events listings this week, but it's been a bit hectic. I just got back from a great loft party at Classon Ave and Myrtle where none other than Scottie B was DJing! Great time, unforunately I had found out about it this very evening otherwise it would have been great to let you all know about it. So with that in mind, I'm making a promise to make sure I report at least every Friday with better event listings.

And on that note, here's one for fun on a Sunday afternoon. The Silent Rave is back! We posted about this a few months ago and this one's going to be bigger and better by what the organizers say.

If you're not familiar with the Silent Rave, is organized by MindSpace, the same folks that do the huge Pillowfight, Light Saber battles, and bubble-battles in Union Square and in Canada.

So at 5:25pm be at Union Square with one of our SELEKTOR mixes or BEMF Live Sets and dance your booty off!

This set of instructions should comprise answers to most people's questions:

The basic premise is thousands of people turn up in a public place, plug in their own ipods, listen to their own music and dance and rave for hours!

The prospect of raving like you really don't care about what other people think, with thousands of fellow dancers, is a bloody brilliant one I think you'll agree!

The OFFICIAL start time to the event is 5:28pm! IGNORE WHAT THE FACEBOOK TIME SAYS (it doesn't let you put minutes like 28 in.) Please control your dancing urges until this exact time!

- NO THE MUSIC WILL NOT BE SYNCED FOR EVERYONE. The main point of Silent Raves is that people have freedom to listen to whatever they want, plus this way we get people from all backgrounds, and don't lose people who wouldn't like the music we'd play.

- HOWEVER, you are very welcome to coordinate something with your mates/make playlists/set up FM transmitters, but that'll all be via your own efforts. The official Silent Rave stance is people listen to anything they like.

- There will be a huge countdown started by your's truly, please no raving before this time! Then its time to go crazy.

- Please respect the other people dancing around you, and also the park! No-one wants a load of litter and bollocks to clean up afterwards, so just use common sense and don't be a muppet.

- Dress up in whatever you want to, your fellow ravers won't judge you!

- Show people they should be dancing in the streets, not in their rooms!

Silent Raves are supposed to be entirely non-destructive activities. As far as I know, no rave-related arrests were made back in April at the first, so let's keep it that way this time too!
I love this city more than any place I've ever lived, and I'd quite like to be able to come back in the future, so please be responsible ravers so I don't get sent to Guantanamo!

The Glass' live set is a combination of their DJ skills and live performance. As one of the guys told me, they start off with a DJ set to pump the crowd up and then when they feel the crowd's going crazy, they do their original stuff.
