Breaking all the rules a good podcast should adhere to, I've left it a terribly long time since the last 'cast.

However, I'm excited to be back in tp mode, especially as I've got 3 exciting brand new tracks to bring to you.

The album is Criminal Record, email me for details on acquiring a copy.

Track list;
The Scruffs - Othertime
Kelsey Hunter - See That
Abound - Unstoppable

Theses guys are all in their teens, mostly high school students, but I think they show huge potential. And having witnessed them live, I can attest to them being tight performers!

Coming up on the tartanpodcast;

Raymond Weir - sit down interview with the man from Gum and The Eisenhowers
Kenny Little - sit down interview with the man from Hollow Horse

Both have new album to promote.

Meetings and stuff

Last week was a blur of meetings, some very useful, some superfluous, some exciting, some nerve-wracking. It’s now Sunday and it’s time to reflect on the week past. All in all it was very productive.

We got the job we were going for, a job that will without doubt change the future of the company. We had a meeting of minds on Friday which was one of those triangulation processes where you’ve got 3 people with 3 separate talents (creative, marketing, networking) coming together with powerful and compelling ideas - ideas that will actually go somewhere and result in real work.

So, yes, good week all in all.

Sven: So what sort of cameras are you using?

Sven: So what sort of cameras are you using?

Me: Er, Sony PMW something-or-other...they only arrived a couple of days again. I'm still getting to grips with them.

Sven: Ah, very interesting. And what sort of resolution do they shoot at?

Me: Er, I think it's 1080p. I think.

Sven: 1080p?! Wow! 1080p. I did not know that Sony made a camera that shot at 1080p.

Me: Em, yeah, I think so.

Sven: Well, well. 1080p. That is amazing. A Sony camera that can shoot at 1080p.

Me: ...

Sven: I mean I know Sony makes cameras that can shoot at 1080*i*, but I didn't know they made one that shoots at 1080*p*.

Me: ...maybe that's what it shoots at; 1080i. Maybe I read it wrong.

Sven: Ah! Well. That would make more sense.

Me: ...

Presentations and new suits

Yesterday marked the 4 week anniversary of me giving up the day job to start the new day job.

Followers of grass-roots podcasting since 2005 will know what the term ‘giving up the day job‘ means and the weight that it carried with us all back then. For me, the reality of giving up one day job for another is still sinking in, and to be honest (and don’t tell the boss) the new day job doesn’t feel like work (yet). But I suppose that’s fair enough. I mean, my old day job involved actual physical exertion and felt like, you know, work.

The new job is hard work at times (15 hour days down in Newbury being an example), let’s make no mistake about that. But as it’s what I want to do it doesn’t feel like it.

One of the biggest differences in my job, apart from being paid a month’s salary in one lump and not having to go back around and collect in the money, is that when you come up with an idea you’re pretty much free to follow it, whereas in my old job new ideas would need to wait until the work was done, i.e. the work that paid the bills. Now I’m paid to come up with and execute new ideas.

Another difference is going to meetings on a regular basis. This was something that was on the border of my comfort zone previously. But I find it easier to raise my self-confidence now that I actually do the job I’m purporting to. In the past I often felt like a bit of a charlatan.

So, in the past 4 weeks there have been a couple of meetings a week culminating this week where I’ve got several important meetings, one after another. One of them is so important that I bought a new suit at the weekend especially. Hopefully I’ll be able to share the details soon, but in the meantime I’m delivering a presentation on social networks and podcasting to a board of directors made up of some of the most influential people in Scottish business. I keep the thought of me being a window cleaner a mere 5 weeks ago out of my mind and focus on the fact that I’m very good at what I do…You have to, right?

Hello, remember me?

Here was me thinking I’d redirected the old Mark:My Words blog to this Tumblr version, but I’d put the URL in wrongly. Sorry about that.

Anyway, you may be wondering where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to as there’s been a distinct lack of podcast and blog content.

Quite simply, I started a new job on 7th January 2008 and bizarrely I’ve found that working in podcasting/new/social media means that it’s actually tricky to find the time to create as much personal content as I was once able to. This is a revelation considering the amount of twittering/jaikuing/seesmicing/blogging/vodcasting of a personal nature many fellow new media wage-earners are able to muster on an average, er, day.

My new job is Managing Director of Podcastmatters Ltd, a company formed in 2006 in Glasgow by Gordon White, a successful and talented designer. He wanted to take the company to the next level but lacked the confidence to do so without someone who was both fluent in new media and competent in production.

So, he searched the ‘net, found me, sent me a Facebook message (very Web 2.0), we met a couple of times in December, once at the start, once near the end, then we agreed terms for me to become start full-time running his podcast business. Straight away my role has involved raising the profile of the company (new website, new podcast series, new Facebook group), meet potential and existing clients, put together presentations on what we offer, write a brochure on the same, and spend 3 days in Newbury capturing content for a forthcoming podcast series for a very high profile enterprise-based client in Glasgow. Yes, it’s been a jam packed month.

February is already heavily booked (thankfully I have access to Gordon’s design business’s PA who helps manage the calendar), and March and the first part of April are going to be mental with another high profile job seeing us working closely with both the local education authority and a new FM radio station in Glasgow. And that doesn’t include the pitch I’m going to be delivering to a board of directors who include some of the most powerful people in Scottish business…

Let’s be honest, there are few opportunities like this in and around new media, even though podcasting itself is over 3 years old, and it was difficult reconciling this job offer with my position with Talking Voices. But the TV team were magnanimous and didn’t stand in the way of me grasping this opportunity of a lifetime.

So, in real terms, it’s no more window cleaning, no more early morning office cleaning, but rather I’m earning my living doing what I love.

Bonus.

BarCamp Scotland 2008 at University of Edinburgh, Appleton Tower Concourse (Friday, February 1, 2008) - Upcoming:
I just discovered this this morning by accident. They organisers, to be honest, haven’t done a great job in promoting the event among the social media/new media networks.

That aside, I’m planning on being there on the Saturday.

Spread the word, last year’s was a great success, it’d be a shame if this year’s wasn’t.

I’m working from home today. I pretty much set my own...

I’m working from home today. I pretty much set my own hours, so I decided that as I’d be away from home from tomorrow till late on Sunday night (we’re covering a conference in Newbury - nice and high profile (details to follow)) I’d stay at home today. That meant I wasn’t up at my usual ridiculously early hour, roadworks on the motorway meaning that I either sit in traffic for an hour, or get up early and have a less congested journey. I slept until 9.22am! A record, I’m sure.

Work is brilliant, everything I’d hoped it would be and a lot more. I know I haven’t blogged fully about my new job, but I’m waiting till we’ve got our press release together. Quite simply we’ve been too busy to properly draw it up, but that’s a good thing. As soon as I’m able I’ll spill all the details.

If you’ve been keeping your eye on my flickr you’ll have seen some of the new gear that arrived in my office this week, including HD, broadcast-standard camcorders, Rhode studio mics, wireless clip on mics, Manfrotto tripods with fluid head, three-point lighting system and Reflecmedia green screen gear. We’re now fully set up for in-house production and we’re mobile too. We’re just waiting for the Mackie Onyx 1220 mixer (with firewire!), which is on back order.

Free plug goes to Creative Video who were really helpful, not just on advising me on the gear to buy, but also keeping in contact with me every day until the order arrived. They even phoned me the following day to make sure everything had arrived properly.

Getting to grips with the new production gear aside, my days have been filled with meetings in private member clubs with clients, handling production orders, putting together presentations in Keynote and editing our company podcast. Talking of which, I better get back to it.

If you’ve visited the fabled www.tartanstories.com in the past couple of days you’ll have noticed that its down. That’s because I accidentally, while clearing some space on my server, deleted the WordPress database.

Now, as I’m too busy to reinstall and reconfigure, I’m pointing the domain name here so that you can keep up with me. Update your feed readers to include this RSS link.

Which is ideal, as I’ve got some exciting news to share, probably early next week, o two counts. One is about my new job. The other piece of news is about the tartanpodcast.

Stay put.

Digital copy of movies via iTunes - your content in the format you want it

Digital copy of movies via iTunes - your content in the format you want it:
Apple yesterday announced the option, via certain DVDs, to transfer an iTunes Digital Copy of the movie to your iTunes library. So, you’ll have the hard copy of the movie in the form of a DVD and a digital copy that you can take with you on your iPod video, iPhone or iTouch.

Once again, another indication that consumers are demanding their content on their terms; they want it in the format that’s right for them and to be able to consume it on demand.

AICR Podcast - Edition 05 - Skin Cancer

On this edition of the podcast we focus on skin cancer, answering the most frequently asked questions about this cancer and we tell you why it's the most survivable. And can coffee help prevent it? Listen to find out.

AICR receives over 500 applications funding applications from scientists around the world every year. How does the charity decide which research they fund? I visited the team in Edinburgh for their scientific advisory committee meeting and discovered the process they put each application through to find only the best science to fund.

Traveling along the M8 to Edinburgh

Another podcast production job, this time for AICR

AICR's committee meeting and how they decide who to grant funds to

Staying at the Sheraton Grand Hotel

Hoping to make a Tartan Stories podcast on how a small, Scottish-based cancer charity spends it's money

Role of producers

You must have control over this as the producer of the content

Podcast production is a cottage industry

I've put my thumb print on all the podcasts I produce even though the subject matter isn't always the same

Producers deserve the credit and should protect and cherish the role
