<itunes:summary>ed laliq - prime penny gaff (kyd07002)
release date: may 4th 2007
press contact: nicky (at) kitty-yo.com

our favourite underground londoner, ed laliq drops his first solo album "prime penny gaff" on kitty-yo in march. the title references the name given to the poor mans music halls that were popular in england at the turn of the 20th century. they were debauched enclaves of music, magic and movement which paved the way for the uks thriving rave culture a century later. it is the post-punk perspective of the 80s, the decade of synth dominance that influences both eds production and vocal aptitude on this album. eds voice encompasses the vocal strengths and diversity of artists such as david bowie, franz ferdinand and the human league, his songwriting skills comparable to those of the legendary joe meek.

having remixed musical honchos such as headman, spektrum and chikinki as well as having lent his vocal talent to amongst others, tiefschwarzs electroclash hit eat books compilation, a solo offering was the next logical step.the album is equipped with a full musical arsenal of audio weapons that would be more than at home in any 21st century penny gaff. tight jazz, sharp horns and swinging beats steal the show throughout with club-orientetated tracks such as say hey (usa) and china rising sitting comfortably next to cinematically sculptured offerings such as pieces. as much a winner on the airwaves as on the dance-floor, aural pleasure guaranteed. werden.

<itunes:summary>jimi tenor and rhythm taxi - live in berlin (kyd07004)
release date: april 20th 2007
international press contact: nicky (at) kitty-yo.com
german press contact: ben (at) kitty-yo.com
more infos: http://www.kitty-yo.com

jimi tenor, musical genius, mastermind, freak. that much we alreadyknow. his live routine however delivers some unexpected surprises. his incredibly eccentric stage performances are legendary. even if you were unable to personally witness him riding a white horse on stage sporting a wedding dress with an eight meter long train then it is highly likely that you heard about it. more nice live gestures followed. on one occasion he organised for the best
champagne to be served onstage to his fellow musicians during a performance. it is no wonder that parallels are frequently made to zappas live shows. jimi tenors world still revisits the electro and techno days of his youth while
continually rotating on an axis of jazz, psychedelic, rock and funk as well as soundtracks from the 70s, spike jones and carla bley. the fact therefore that it has taken him 13 years to produce his first live album is perhaps not as surprising as it might seem. jimi tenor is in fact such a perfectionist that he prefers to be the one pulling his own strings rather than handing the reins over to someone else. it has always been crucial for him that every aspect of his performance works in harmony and he guarantees that his elaborate arrangements go according to plan months before an actual show by meticulously ensuring that everyone and everything has been duly delegated. his goal is always to deliver a perfect show. with rehearsals often lasting longer than 14 hours, precision is an ever-present quality aspired to with his studio and session musicians. this results in perfection being the only form of impulsive,
musical expression that accompanies them onstage during a live show.

"live in berlin" is by no means a hi-fi concept live album. instead it has managed to retain the refreshingly spontaneous nature of jimi tenor's live performances which are increasingly rooted in his laid-back and relaxed demeanour which has steadily developed over the years. the birth of his two children definitely contributed to this essence of "live in berlin" as perhaps did the childlike abandon of his live guests, rhythm taxi, all luminaries of the afro beat and high-life scenes of ghana and nigeria in west africa. rhythm taxi, who are renowned for being at the very heart of berlins afro and reggae scenes, teamed up with jimi for some of the tracks on his seventh album "beyond the stars". this collaboration was both inspirational and incredibly fruitful and resulted in them touring the entire album together alongside several backing vocalists. listeners are in for a treat - an abundance of more off the hook musical madness could not be wished for.

<itunes:summary>the michelles - springtime (kyd07009)

the michelles are a bonafide mongrel of a band and have all the more bite for it. hailing from america, sweden, wales and the uk, the boys have now rooted themselves in berlin. taking influences from the strokes, the beatles the michelles fire together reliably crunchy guitars with more spontaneous rhythm and melody than your average line-up.

tim, the main singer songwriter of the michelles, grew up in a small town in southern virginia, usa. he dropped out of university and ran away to london to start a band. the band got together in january 2006, playing melodic american and english influenced indie-pop. they sing about lost love, the big city, and leaving home, classic emotions with a timeless style. lets dance. their first single springtime received many great reviews and was featured in nme in late 2006. it was released on a small british label focused on the uk, in co-operation with kitty-yo and now we are going to licence the single and re-release it. in the meantime the boys have been touring a lot. playing their own shows and supporting acts such as the horrors, the pipettes, the rifles, chikinki, robots in disguise, and the young knives during their short time as a band. they continue to tour extensively as their profile rises in the uk andcontinental europe. a second single is going to be released in the near future and the boys are also working on their first album.

<itunes:summary>shadow huntaz and kareem - irreparable damage | out on june 15th 2007

we proudly present an outstanding collaboration between americas all-star hiphop/electronica pioneers "shadow huntaz" (located in los angeles, philadelphia, chicago) and the berlin based producer, label-owner and dj "kareem". having already dropped beats for a whole host of european labels such as skam and joined forces with idm activists like "funckarma", "shadow huntaz" have firmly rooted themselves in our musical minds. their collaboration with "kareem" has given fruit to 11 tracks which showcase how kareems lo-fi soundwaves and minimal structures are complemented by the up-front lyrics delivered by the mcs nongenetic, breaff and sabdullah of "shadow huntaz." complex vocals combined with idm-textured compositions, dark loops and cut-up breakbeats makes for one killah record. if there is gonna be a soundtrack to the apocalypse then shadow huntaz will be number one on the boom box.

the early 90s gave us the grunge rock sound typified by the turn on, tune in and drop out mentality of the 60s psychedelic movement. bands such as grifters, smog and pavement played guitars that were as un-tuned as the raw emotions they were singing about. oliver obert had been a past master of this scene and sound for years yet it was not until 1993 that everyone else caught on to this musical movement. obert took control of guitar, bass and drums and recruited roland saum for the strings. 1994 saw sportsguitar off to a pretty glamorous start. three months after their self-released debut album fade / cliche. the reputation of the legendary grunge label subpop in seattle reached the band. having worked wonders for label mates nirvana and afghan wigs subpop finally released two gems (gonggong b/w tits) as a 7inch.

<itunes:summary>mittekill - stringenz des wahnsinns | out on july 29th 2007

synth-pop and rock and roll are in fact pretty good bed-fellows. and when mittekill are behind the controls the pop rocks and the rock pops and yes you guessed it, they just can not stop. like musical magpies, jan hohmann aka neurot and friedrich - freedarich- greiling have collected all that glitters and all that is gold about the 20th centurys sonic landscape. the best of your 80s collection takes on laptop loops with the odd ghetto glitch. while one dresses in a bespoke suite and likes to play with conservative chic, the other hogs the limelight and charms us with his crooked smile and his air guitar. they have supported spitting off tall buildings, richardkool, doc schoko and were also part of the legendary windfall of the 80s tour with nachlader.

their music is crazy in a lo-fi sense and serve to both contrast and complement their unconventional lyrics. there is also a prevailing sense of loss to be felt in their music, which is both deadly and endearing. similar to outfits like groenemeyer, mittekill have for years been pushing their unique sound and educating the ears of their listeners while doing so. and as the saying goes, if it aint broke, do not fix it. stringenz des wahnsinns showcases both the breath and depth of mittekills talents - from wonderful whimsical love songs to awesome anthems. my way is the road.

<itunes:summary>molloy - this is fucking brilliant | out on july 27th 2007

this is fucking brilliant... yes it is, so brilliant in fact that its the name of molloys upcoming album on kitty yo. whether they are telling their loyal uk audiences just how fucking brilliant they are or whether they are practising how to say it in german, french and spanish for their forthcoming continental tours, you can rest assured that their music is way better than good. a take-away pizza joint can share some of the credit for what was to come, as it was over a stuffed-crust pepperoni that they met in december 2006 and bonded over their love of the colours green and orange. scrabble also had its part to play as it was during the afore mentioned game that they came up with their artist names: jez (guitar and vocals), caz (vocals and guitar), chaz (bass), jacqz (synthesizer and vocals) und toz (drums). their music combines the unconventional sound of the b52s with the dirty beats of peaches and then adds the hard rock guitar riffs of acdc and mixes in the cool, punk elements of television. that combined with their duran duran hair makes bone fide dirty-garage electro-rock clash at its most fucking brilliant. unconventional lyrics draw us in to the often satirical world that is molloy, a name that pays homage to their love of samuel beckett.tracy... will be released at the beginning of july 2007 with a very limited pressing of green 7inch vinyl on the london label way out records. a few weeks later its time for your ipods to fix up and look sharp for kitty yos digital release of their mini-lp this is fucking brilliant on 27th july.

the early 90s gave us the grunge rock sound typified by the turn on, tune in and drop out mentality of the 60s psychedelic movement. bands such as grifters, smog and pavement played guitars that were as un-tuned as the raw emotions they were singing about. oliver obert had been a past master of this scene and sound for years yet it was not until 1993 that everyone else caught on to this musical movement. obert took control of guitar, bass and drums and recruited roland saum for the strings. 1994 saw sportsguitar off to a pretty glamorous start. three months after their self-released debut album fade / cliche. the reputation of the legendary grunge label subpop in seattle reached the band. having worked wonders for label mates nirvana and afghan wigs subpop finally released two gems (gonggong b/w tits) as a 7inch.

this is fucking brilliant... yes it is, so brilliant in fact that its the name of molloys upcoming album on kitty yo. whether they are telling their loyal uk audiences just how fucking brilliant they are or whether they are practising how to say it in german, french and spanish for their forthcoming continental tours, you can rest assured that their music is way better than good. a take-away pizza joint can share some of the credit for what was to come, as it was over a stuffed-crust pepperoni that they met in december 2006 and bonded over their love of the colours green and orange. scrabble also had its part to play as it was during the afore mentioned game that they came up with their artist names: jez (guitar and vocals), caz (vocals and guitar), chaz (bass), jacqz (synthesizer and vocals) und toz (drums). their music combines the unconventional sound of the b52s with the dirty beats of peaches and then adds the hard rock guitar riffs of acdc and mixes in the cool, punk elements of television. that combined with their duran duran hair makes bone fide dirty-garage electro-rock clash at its most fucking brilliant. unconventional lyrics draw us in to the often satirical world that is molloy, a name that pays homage to their love of samuel beckett.tracy... will be released at the beginning of july 2007 with a very limited pressing of green 7inch vinyl on the london label way out records. a few weeks later its time for your ipods to fix up and look sharp for kitty yos digital release of their mini-lp this is fucking brilliant on 27th july.

from its conception, kitty-yo has enjoyed both a musical and personal affinity to the medium of film. while various titles were used in a whole host of great films over the years, it was almost seven years before the first direct engagement with film music took place. in 2001 kitty yo released the sound track to esther gronehorn's socially motivated drama "alaska.de" which received, amongst others, the prize for best film music in 2002 from the german film critics association. it was during the conceptual development stages of the cd soundtrack that the paths of kitty yo and christian meyer crossed for the first time. this proved to have a very positive outcome for the soundtrack as mosermeyerdöring were so captivated by the musical score that the complete film music was then added as a separate cd to the soundtrack.

back in 2001 the emphasis was much more on stories with fragmental outlines. his current work, noticeably his 2007 solo release, still relates to short stories but ones that form more of a sequence in the mind’s eye. 2001 and 2007 are without doubt years which have had a definite influence on his career yet the points in between have also been equally important for understanding christian meyer’s microcosm. born in brussels, he’s been living and working in berlin for years. it was here that his first work for dance theatres, film and performances started out. he then worked musically and artistically with rudolf moser from the einstürzenden neubauten, the collaboration of the moseymeyer duo being the logical consequence that followed. further collaborations with ulrike haage (rainbirds), oliver doerell (dictaphone), stephan wöhrmann (swod), roger doering (orchestra obscur) and tanja ries and tours in europe,
the us and in south america with the felix ruckert company and arthur kuggeleyn company followed.

the story behind "within" also began life on the road, inspired and shaped by the impressions of being on tour around the world. "within" is an album of withdrawal, of going home, of a stroll through realities, a dive into dream-worlds, a restless sprint between electronic rhythms and abstract soundscapes. "within" also offers highly seductive and moving elements,
which one almost fails to grasp on a first hearing. spooky and cinematic, mysterious and bewitching.

the front of luxury

with their new album rkahf take a decidedly more rocky and song-orientated direction than on their previous one i am disco. linda wölfel and pauline boudry have perfected the interplay between cryptic, disparate tones and major keys, most notably in the refrains and with their vocals. funky guitars and swirling 60s organ counterpoints form a cool undertone to the songs which are broken up by rkahf’s typically cool melodies and which cheerfully join with the overlaying samples and exceptional rhythms and beats. in contrast to their first album the electronic elements find a more extensive, consistent input and create a deliberately dissonant and intelligent encoded flow–deconstruct me down to the limit is a line from the song talkin’ about words and that appears to be the band’s musical postulate. the febrile organ melodies, which continually mingle with the sound like a distant swarm of gulls, accompany and support the vocals that occur elsewhere.

both talking about words and communicate, an ostensibly happy "clap hands" song focus on the positive basic premise that you should talk from your heart and not just your brain and deal with the frequently depicted difficulty of communicating what one actually needs and feels with one another while discussing the importance of dialogue in every type of relationship. speedometer, the secret hit of the album, subtly bores in light and steady to the listener’s ear. while an exceptionally dry beat relentlessly presses forward, the multi-layered vocals seem frozen in time. the interplay of powerful funkiness and melancholic strong and powerful voices defers the feeling of the light and shady parts in this song about a woman who revealingly tries to get a clear head.

queer diskotek, rkahfs ode to the queer and feminist community, which they are a part of, seems as though it is exposed like the ebb and flow of a steady movement. with bubbling beats which at first appear to be treading water and the almost folk-like guitar melodies that feel their way as well as the wistful sawlike sound of the singing, the song could almost be a bit withdrawn but the use of a booming bass-line definitely makes the groove up-tempo. so far there have only been comparable acts to listen to from new york, there are nods to esg and luscious jackson but the coolness of the queens of rhythm comes across as being more intense. one is reminded of stereolab but with a radical access to harmonic lines with intelligent breaks.

electronica, pop, 60s beat and punk influences – rhythm king and her friends do not shy away from whisking diverse styles and languages together and in doing so they present us with their quite unique concept of danceable, catchy, musical and lyrical music which is a unique mosaic of sound on every level which the front of luxury definitely proves can no longer be avoided.

mittekill - stringenz des wahnsinns | out on july 29th 2007

synth-pop and rock and roll are in fact pretty good bed-fellows. and when mittekill are behind the controls the pop rocks and the rock pops and yes you guessed it, they just can not stop. like musical magpies, jan hohmann aka neurot and friedrich - freedarich- greiling have collected all that glitters and all that is gold about the 20th centurys sonic landscape. the best of your 80s collection takes on laptop loops with the odd ghetto glitch. while one dresses in a bespoke suite and likes to play with conservative chic, the other hogs the limelight and charms us with his crooked smile and his air guitar. they have supported spitting off tall buildings, richardkool, doc schoko and were also part of the legendary windfall of the 80s tour with nachlader.

their music is crazy in a lo-fi sense and serve to both contrast and complement their unconventional lyrics. there is also a prevailing sense of loss to be felt in their music, which is both deadly and endearing. similar to outfits like groenemeyer, mittekill have for years been pushing their unique sound and educating the ears of their listeners while doing so. and as the saying goes, if it aint broke, do not fix it. stringenz des wahnsinns showcases both the breath and depth of mittekills talents - from wonderful whimsical love songs to awesome anthems. my way is the road.

hailing from dublin and now residing in berlin, nina hynes has been making music since she was seven. along with her band ‘the husbands' - ivan birthistle, peter cheevers and most recently the french musician and sound engineer, fabien leseure she has been creating a unique sound that can be classified as atmospheric and dreamy indie pop. her first foray into music started when she used to collect the tapes of bleeps from the heart machines in a hospital where her auntie worked and would record herself singing over the bleeps. it was around this time that she started to learn the piano and shortly after she wrote her first song 'big woman'. since then, she has learnt the guitar and her shows often incorporate live-layering and sampling using guitar pedals and spoons as well as incorporating costumes and visuals edited live to the music. she studied sound engineering and music technology at college and now writes songs and music on guitar, piano, harp, computer or whatever instrument is lying around. she has toured extensively and been involved in many bands, instrumental, experimental, acoustic, electronic and electro rock.

in 2003 nina was nominated for "best female" in the meteor awards and she has performed on over twenty compilations, soundtracks and releases as well as having collaborated with many people including the experimental french composer hector zazou and brian eno collaborator, harold budd. the actress and singer, jane birkn "je t'aime" has recently covered a song of nina's on a
collaboration album with hector zazou. following on from her critically acclaimed debut solo release in 1999 called "creation" (voted number 44 on amazon.com's top 100 releases of the year) and her subsequent debut album "staros" 2002 we are now proud to present her first release on kitty yo – "really really do".

both talking about words and communicate, an ostensibly happy "clap hands" song focus on the positive basic premise that you should talk from your heart and not just your brain and deal with the frequently depicted difficulty of communicating what one actually needs and feels with one another while discussing the importance of dialogue in every type of relationship. speedometer, the secret hit of the album, subtly bores in light and steady to the listener’s ear. while an exceptionally dry beat relentlessly presses forward, the multi-layered vocals seem frozen in time. the interplay of powerful funkiness and melancholic strong and powerful voices defers the feeling of the light and shady parts in this song about a woman who revealingly tries to get a clear head.

queer diskotek, rkahfs ode to the queer and feminist community, which they are a part of, seems as though it is exposed like the ebb and flow of a steady movement. with bubbling beats which at first appear to be treading water and the almost folk-like guitar melodies that feel their way as well as the wistful sawlike sound of the singing, the song could almost be a bit withdrawn but the use of a booming bass-line definitely makes the groove up-tempo. so far there have only been comparable acts to listen to from new york, there are nods to esg and luscious jackson but the coolness of the queens of rhythm comes across as being more intense. one is reminded of stereolab but with a radical access to harmonic lines with intelligent breaks.

electronica, pop, 60s beat and punk influences – rhythm king and her friends do not shy away from whisking diverse styles and languages together and in doing so they present us with their quite unique concept of danceable, catchy, musical and lyrical music which is a unique mosaic of sound on every level which the front of luxury definitely proves can no longer be avoided.

jens döring aka e.stonji is a man of many talents. since 1999 the musician and artist has recorded, produced and remixed under a variety of monikers such as e:gum , jerry lusion and hp.stonji but it is as e.stonji, his electronic solo project, that he will release his first album for kitty yo digital called ‘particles’. effortlessly combining breakbeats with idm structures and ambient grooves, his discography has included countless cd/lp/12” releases for labels such as digital, skam, klein and phantomnoise among many others. in addition döring works as a radio play director and producer for the german audio book publishers while also working as a sound and media artist making video and audio installations. e.stonji’s music oscillates between abstract breaks and dance-driven beats, he performs his live sets with his drummer matthias freund and they nicely blur the lines between the urban dancefloor and the nerdy disco. the featured podcast track 'cats'n'oggs' was recorded in 2006 at rhiz, vienna.

hailing from dublin and now residing in berlin, nina hynes has been making music since she was seven. along with her band ‘the husbands' - ivan birthistle, peter cheevers and most recently the french musician and sound engineer, fabien leseure she has been creating a unique sound that can be classified as atmospheric and dreamy indie pop. her first foray into music started when she used to collect the tapes of bleeps from the heart machines in a hospital where her auntie worked and would record herself singing over the bleeps. it was around this time that she started to learn the piano and shortly after she wrote her first song 'big woman'. since then, she has learnt the guitar and her shows often incorporate live-layering and sampling using guitar pedals and spoons as well as incorporating costumes and visuals edited live to the music. she studied sound engineering and music technology at college and now writes songs and music on guitar, piano, harp, computer or whatever instrument is lying around. she has toured extensively and been involved in many bands, instrumental, experimental, acoustic, electronic and electro rock.

in 2003 nina was nominated for "best female" in the meteor awards and she has performed on over twenty compilations, soundtracks and releases as well as having collaborated with many people including the experimental french composer hector zazou and brian eno collaborator, harold budd. the actress and singer, jane birkn "je t'aime" has recently covered a song of nina's on a
collaboration album with hector zazou. following on from her critically acclaimed debut solo release in 1999 called "creation" (voted number 44 on amazon.com's top 100 releases of the year) and her subsequent debut album "staros" 2002 we are now proud to present her first release on kitty yo – "really really do".

<itunes:summary>shadow huntaz and kareem - irreparable damage

we proudly present an outstanding collaboration between americas all-star hiphop/electronica pioneers "shadow huntaz" (located in los angeles, philadelphia, chicago) and the berlin based producer, label-owner and dj "kareem". having already dropped beats for a whole host of european labels such as skam and joined forces with idm activists like "funckarma", "shadow huntaz" have firmly rooted themselves in our musical minds. their collaboration with "kareem" has given fruit to 11 tracks which showcase how kareems lo-fi soundwaves and minimal structures are complemented by the up-front lyrics delivered by the mcs nongenetic, breaff and sabdullah of "shadow huntaz." complex vocals combined with idm-textured compositions, dark loops and cut-up breakbeats makes for one killah record. if there is gonna be a soundtrack to the apocalypse then shadow huntaz will be number one on the boom box.

<itunes:summary>plastique de reve - jeux sans frontieres - cuts-012, out on 21.09.2007

plastique de reve is a swiss dj and producer who is now based in berlin. after smashing the electro scene to bits with his two releases on gigolo in 2001 and 2002, plastique went deeper underground with wicked releases on zuerichs 7b label and tigas turbo recordings in montreal, and a string of remixes and productions for different artists in switzerland, belgium, france, canada and the us. his electro-breaks, ebm and acid house roots as an early 'raver' in the 80s and 90s fuel a sound that is always fresh, eclectic and uniquely hybrid. now plastique de reve sets out to continue breaking new musical frontiers, while retaining his own distinctive 'plastic' sound. his new ep on kitty-yo features 5 very different tracks of 'multispeed varistyle', between electro-breaks and baile funk, uk bass, acid house and techno, with heavy basslines and beatbox programming, funky hooks and catchy vocal cut-ups. each track tells its own story, taking the listener on a round-the-world trip, from rio to berlin via chicago, montreal and london.

jens döring aka e.stonji is a man of many talents. since 1999 the musician and artist has recorded, produced and remixed under a variety of monikers such as e:gum , jerry lusion and hp.stonji but it is as e.stonji, his electronic solo project, that he will release his first album for kitty yo digital called ‘particles’. effortlessly combining breakbeats with idm structures and ambient grooves, his discography has included countless cd/lp/12” releases for labels such as digital, skam, klein and phantomnoise among many others. in addition döring works as a radio play director and producer for the german audio book publishers while also working as a sound and media artist making video and audio installations. e.stonji’s music oscillates between abstract breaks and dance-driven beats, he performs his live sets with his drummer matthias freund and they nicely blur the lines between the urban dancefloor and the nerdy disco.

it was at the ripe old age of 14 that maoi started to be heavily influenced by the minimal, house and electro sounds of the 90s and that maoi the musician was born. over the years his tastes became increasingly catholic and he also began to incorporate hip hop, jazz, ambient and oriental influences into his mixes. a significant album for his aural development was coldcut's "stoned, chilled groove" epic and maoi was inspired to produce ambient compilations and to mix a variety of tracks. it wasn't long before he was able to master to the art of sampling to such an extent that he now creates totally new soundscapes with the smallest of sonic fragments, pushing the envelope until it's no longer recognizable from it's previous incarnation. he is equally inspired by his own music as by artists and producers such as amon tobin, paul frankland and kenny dorham. good music is important to him as sincerity. he avoids categorization and the use of words to describe his music as much as possible: "when you decide to communicate through music, art, photography etc, words become meaningless." his music is as vivacious as it sounds. that's why he also uses 'real' instruments with sounds that are much more powerful than those conjured up by synthesizers.

filip kaniecki aka monosylabikk was born in zielona gora, poland, in 1983. his foray into the world of music began when he started to play the drums in a punk rock band. it wasn’t long before his fellow band mates cottoned on to his immense talent and filip decided to focus all of his time and energy on his music. midi controllers, turntables and drum kits all played their part in shaping his thirst for musical knowledge.

guided by the ‘cut and paste’ school of thought, he then started working on his solo project. in the early days of his musical adventure, monosylabikk spent hours listening to hip hop, drum’n’bass and punk rock, mixing records with cutting-edge polish jazz samples. to create his compositions he sampled whatever he could get in his hands on from vinyl to mp3's and tape recordings and by doing so he always built solid sound structures and harmonies with minimalist sensibilities. always looking outside of the box and never content to stick with one style, his early tracks are genre-bending works of art merging elements of funk and hip hop which gradually evolved into being even more experimental. this has resulted in several fruitful collaborations with artists such as vocalist bee (us) and mc coherent motion (us).

hailing from america, wales and germany, the michelles are everyone's favourite, bona fide mongrel band, who have now rooted themselves in berlin. taking influences from bands such as the strokes and the beatles, the michelles fire together reliably crunchy guitars with more spontaneous rhythm and melody than your average boy band. having gigged like wild fire over the summer they are now releasing 'sober rain', a wonderful follow up to their super hit single 'springtime', which was featured in julie delpy's film 'two days in paris'. be prepared to be blown away.

laub is the german duo of vocalist antye greie and guitarist jotka. they have been with kitty-yo right from the early beginning, releasing various beautiful records. in short, laub’s music has always been about the play of shiny surfaces and this album may be viewed as but a more mature version on this basic model. their latest release ‘deinetwegen’ was released on antye greie’s own label agf produktion. now the group latches on to the blues, but it’s signature is incorporated into the duo’s own musical ethic of bleeps and post-techno rhythms, and quite apart from interpreting it in a meaningful or otherwise new manner, they show that it is but a spectral object disincarnated from all narrative. no desire, no writhing ghosts which whirl up from the depths of the unconscious - no more so than in past full-lengths, at any rate - but a work of inflections, nuances, liquidity and flux.

call it future pop or digital pop. despite having a “non-traditional” band and their untypical way of
singer/songwriting, laub’s ‘filesharing’ is by no means a ‘clicks and cuts’ piece. it is about pop music. compared to other artists who invoke the ‘future’ to refresh conventional song structures by producers or musicians by simply incorporating a modern futuristic sound, laub genuinely innovate with technique and involve jotka’s dialogue with innovative digital production concepts and their impact (on sound). sound and skills developed as a consequence, a mixture of pop, experimental electronics, processing, vocal treatment. laptops and file transfer protocol. antye is ‘texting’ in her own unique way that uses everyday language and lyrical content. simple words form self created words. her ‘emotional research’ on language based on ‘old-school’ imagery such as gears or train stations progresses to more technical one. an example of her text: ‘to result in onward development in code or is evolution a cycle mode’. furthermore, she employs romantic devices such as ‘we are riding the moped through lavender’ amongst ice cold broken beats and ambient backdrops. one must say, her fusion of poetry and pop is very charming indeed.
