<itunes:summary>Loik Dury, from the Kraked label, former Radio Nova programmer, and Djouls, from the TIMEC label, have been assuming in Paris for a few years now an active role of incubators for many artists and Djs.

Disappointed by the formatting of the medias, they decided to launch this ParisDjs.com blog to spread their Podcast recorded with their crew of old veterans and young Parisian foxes.

So mixes, selections, histories of the music, battles, debates and legendary mix-tapes will flower each week in there. You will finally be able (re-)discover the true soulful spirit of the North-East Paris.</itunes:summary>

Info :
Now it may safely be said that the heritage of Soviet cinematography accounts for dozens of movies which are marked not only by distinguished decisions of stage direction, unique theatrical and actory style, but also by musical decisions which can be referred to the worldwide cultural heritage. By the way, this tradition was born in USSR in 20-30s of XX century when the production of films with jazz arrangements began in Soviet Russia. The total volume of accumulated material is amazingly great and diverse. For example, American and European famous soundtracks were re-issued and sampled many times. In our country such a work wasn't fulfilled, therefore now the primary task for development of this trend is to create a catalogue of Soviet films and soundtracks which afterwards will be issued in the form of albums and compilations on vinyl disks, CD or, may be, in the form of reworks. Several enthusiasts already began the search for rarities. If you strike 'Soviet jazz-funk films' in the search bar on www.youtube.com, you'll find many musical fragments. A few recordings were issued on vinyl, however all original recordings exist and are kept in record offices and funds of Russian Federation, CIS countries and Baltic States. Another important task is to decide upon a problem of royalty, both for recordings themselves and for fragments and samples that are used, because it can became a sufficiently wide room for manoeuvre for contemporary artists.
Promotion only.
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-08-28

Info :
The second volume of our '21st Century Afro' series begins its trip with a peaceful afro-ethio-cuban trip from Lightning Head (alias Glyn 'Bigga' Bush/UK), extracted from the 12 inch taster of his upcoming album ('13 faces of Lightning Head'), then heads directly into heavy afro-kraut-jazz from Nomo, a collective from Michigan developing quite an unique sound. This 'Last Beat' is to be found on their powerful third album ('Ghost Rock'). After another instant afrosoul classic taken from The Budos Band's masterpiece, 'The Budos Band II', the mix navigates into supafunky ethio-jazz from The Lions, a Los Angeles collective of musicians you may also find playing in Breakestra, Connie Price and the Keystones, Orgone, Madlib's Sound Directions, Plant Life, Clutchy Hopkins, the Greyboy allstars... Their 'Jungle Struttin' album mixes reggae, ethiojazz, colombian and african grooves with soul, jazz, and funk! Things then get more focused with a devastating pamphlet from Seun Kuti and Egypt 80, one of the many available on his booming 'Many Things' album. The Shawn Lee apparition in this selection whichcomes afterwards is quite a surprise, but since the multi-instrumentalist genius decided to go global on his latest album ('Miles of Styles'), there's no reason to pass out on it. The same goes for the closing track, the hard-hitting Afrobeat drum-powered 'Platypus Strut' by Ohmega Watts - with the help of members of the Breakestra/Connie Price/Antibalas... it's a small world.
Info :
In the next 6 weeks, Paris DJs activists Grant Phabao and Djouls will explore the many facets of 21st century African music, from Afrobeat to Afrofunk, from Afrosoul to Afrojazz, etc. This week's selection opens the salva with one of THE albums of the year, the second opus from The Budos Band, one you NEED - trust us. After a glimpse of the new Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble album, we're proud to present a new master of African music, Seun Kuti, bravely and proudly reaching out to his father with a bomb of a first album! A record we'll lookout for in the coming months is Antony Joseph and The Spasm Band's new one on french jazz label Heavenly Sweetness. You'll get here a taste of their recently released "La Diablesse EP", which hints at some serious afro-punk-jazz grooves. Concerning Kokolo, we've already told ya many times that their formula is flawless: funky afrobeat to dance to. Nuff' said. Nostalgia 77 is a UK artist with a huge soul-jazz sensibility, producing, remixing, releasing a LOT of stuff on Brighton's Tru Thoughts label and around. Grant Phabao got the chance to remix his cover of The White Stripes' 7 Nation Army featuring the incredible vocals of Alice Russell. It's available on his current "One Offs, Remixes and B-sides" compilation, along with an afrodeepfunk remix of his "Freedom" track, which we've included here. Closing this mix is former Fela guitarist/bassist Oghene Kologbo's latest single, extracted from his Fela Kuti homage album (available with two different covers for CD and vinyl). If you were in Paris this August (2008) you shouldn't have missed the 4 consecutive free Antibalas free shows in Parcs - Oghene was there guest-starring, offering some superb afrorock guitar solos... All in all 30mn is VERY short for afrobeat - but if you come back next week, we should have uploaded a new selection of the best 21st Century Afro Music you may find!! See ya there.

Ivan Tchijevsky - Diggin' Up Two Rare Concerts

Ivan Tchijevsky - Diggin' Up Two Rare Concerts
(exclusive mix for ParisDJs.com) 2008-08-04

Tracklisting :
01. One day In Kiev - Jazz Ensemble 'Mugam'
02. Concert for the voice by Constantin Petrosyan

Info :
This is my fifth podcast, and to celebrate it, I have prepared something special, jazzy and at the same time, sodden with Caucasus folk culture. This podcast consists of two parts: First â is a fragment (pictures of Caucasus) of an jazz-ensemble called "Mugam" lead by Vagif Mustafa-Zade (1978).
Vagif Mustafa-zade â was a prize winner of such festivals as "Tallin-66", "Tallin-67" and "Jazz-69" in Azerbaijan. In 1977 Vagif became a prize-winner of an United Jazz festival in Donezk. Jazz festival "Tbilisi-78" has brought him a name as the best pianist in USSR. Having taken participation in the International jazz composition contest held in Monaco in 1979, Vagif won the First prize and received a beautiful white piano as a prize. Finding a more detailed biography of Vagif Mustafa-zade isn't that hard, most importantly is the effect his music brings on you.

Second part of the podcast is a fragment of a big-band concert by Vladimir Chekasin, with an assistance of an composer named Constantin Petrosyan. The voice of the project became Tatevick Oganesyan â the "queen" of soviet jazz vocal, the Russian Ella Fitzgerald. Even nowadays, she is still matchless in the jazz mainstream. Tatevick's manner of singing is heavily influenced by traditional Armenian music. She has sang in America, Europe, Australia. She received applauses at Lincoln center and Carnegie Hall.

Grant Phabao and Djouls - Are Molesting Laura Vol.12

Grant Phabao & Djouls - Are Molesting Laura Vol.12
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-06-22

Info :
We hope you enjoyed the previous Molesting Laura mix of soul and funk reggae covers cos this one's in the same vein, with soul (a bit) and reggae (mostly) interpretations of songs by The Supremes, The Temptations, Barry White, The Bee Gees (!), Santana and a few selected others... Opening and closing this mix is our favorite UK soul singer Alice Russell, first covering The Supremes' My World Is Empty Without You with blue-eyed class, and then being remixed by our main man Grant Phabao, with the help of legendary Jamaican deejay The Lone Ranger adding some new lyrics in the mix. An incredible treat - don't miss the Lone Ranger with the Soul Stereo Soundsystem on June 27th at Les Nuits Zebrees (La Bellevilloise, Paris and on Radio Nova), and the following day opening for the Garance Reggae Festival at Le Zenith (Paris)!!

Grant Phabao and Djouls - Funk With Kids

Grant Phabao and Djouls - Funk With Kids
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-01-19

Info :
A mix that's been nearly a year in preparation, a mix that started with the best 'Funk For Kids' dispositions, but ended in a 'Funk WITH Kids' way all grown-ups should enjoy too. We've been digging for months for those kiddie funk tracks, and thanks to the "ABC's of Kid Soul" compilation recently released by the Numero Group (ditributed by the friendly Differ-Ant people over here in France), we've finally managed to round up quite a surprising soundtrack of electic grooves with kids (or choirs of kids) singing...

Also a special big-up to Medeski Martin and Wood's new album of music for kids on Little Monster Records, 'Let's Go Everywhere', which showcases the versatility of our favorite jazz band out there. You'll aslo find John Medeski playing keyboards along with Steven Bernstein (from Sex Mob) on trumpet and Sharon Jones on vocals (with a few others...) on the 'Baby Loves Jazz' album - one that all parents should get when they get tired of FM Radio and other kinds of debilitating kids music, one that will ravish the youngsters in the backseat!

Finally, everybody must know the Justice 'D.A.N.C.E.' track by now, but we've taken the liberty of playing just before this one a bit of the track that must have inspired such a worldwide single, the MASSIVE hit from Erik Rug and MC Dynamax, remixed by L'Aroye and Ky, 'Tribute To My People'. If you don't own this 12 inch yet, find yourself a new record supplier cos' this was THE track of 2006. Nuff' said.
