An Unpleasant Surprise ...

As I sat down at my computer Friday morning to start work on the next episode of Murphy's Saloon, I found that not even the external "power ready" light was visible.

I called Apple tech support, fed a sizable number of dollar bills into the slot, was advised by the tech helper to push the internal "reset" button - and got nothing.

<p<Flash forward four hours (leaving out a number of not-entirely-relevant details of my day):

After a little poking and prodding of my G5's guts at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store, I was informed that the internal power supply unit had to be replaced, which would take 3-7 days.

Soooooo ... if you've subscribed to this show notes blog through RSS, you now have a preliminary written report (from a borrowed notebook computer) about why the episode I'm assembling today is going to be short and, very likely, not up to my usual audio production standards.

Please stay tuned!

Murphy's Saloon #1 Fan

Cheryl in Gunter, Texas, has laid claim to the title of "Murphy's Saloon's Biggest Fan." I think she makes a good case for her claim. (Comment below)

" ... I want to nominate myself as one of your biggest fans, or your least scary stalker - whichever pleases you most. As of today - before today's podcast posting - I have downloaded
each and every episode and transferred them onto CDs. Yes - all 128 episodes. Even episodes 1 through 5, which we won't talk about.

"Whatever am I doing with all those CDs?

"I take them to my car a 6-pack at a time. I play them on my 45-minute to 1 hour commute when there is absolutely NOTHING on the radio (which is every day right after the weather and traffic on the 8's usually.) Anyone riding with me who hears it and likes it gets to take it home with them, with instructions to go to the website, subscribe, and pass the CD on. That has happened much more than a few times by now, let me assure you.

"Once I've given them all away, I'm intending to do it all over again. I feel kind of like I'm like the 'Johnny Appleseed' for Murphy's Saloon in North Texas.

"My next goal is to listen to all the podcasts. According to my i-Tunes, there are 98 I haven't listened to yet - at work. That doesn't count the ones I've already listened to in the car - I would estimate that as another 20. And you are making it difficult because I'm going to listen to that Albert Collins one again today instead of another new one. But I'm using the i-tunes list as my official 'listening log'.

"So to re-iterate my qualifications for biggest fan I have -

- subscribed via i-tunes
- put a pin in the frapper map (I'm Gunter, Texas)
- won a Murphy's Saloon T-shirt Contest
- submitted a joke which was read as joke of the week
- got my son's photograph on a podcast episode download file
- filled out the listener survey ...
- downloaded all podcasts
- transferred all podcasts to CDs
- recruited at least 3 new Murphy's Saloon fans (that I know of)

"Ha! Beat that you blues-loving Murphy-ites!

"But I'm not done, I know. I have a few more goals before I will be absolutely unbeatable. I WILL very soon talk you into letting me do one of your announcements, or read one of my own jokes myself. (I was a disc jockey in college - I've got some decent radio voice cred.) After that I have goals to put money in the tip jar, and buy cds from artists you've played that I've not already got in my collection. ... "
